I think that the people are the main thing at OOPSLA. But papers bring people to the conference who are doing things. It isn't important that I go to listen to the paper. But it is important that the authors are there.

Likewise tutorials bring people who want to learn things. All of them have an important flavor for the mix.

I mostly go to meet new and old people. Much of my best work is collaborative and it is here and a few other places where I can sit down with my collaborators for a bit. This humanizes the process of creating cool stuff.

It is more than just "a fun place to meet". It is an essential thing.
